Why We Teach American English
Holmwoods believes in exposing students to the rich variety of English spoken around the world — from British and American to Australian, Canadian, and many more. English is a global language, and every variety is valid. Our presenters and vloggers speak with British, American, Australian, and Canadian accents, as well as regional variations within those countries. At higher levels, you’ll also find material featuring more challenging varieties.
That said, when it comes to teaching spelling, we’ve chosen to follow American English. Why? Because in global education and international business, American English is often the default standard. Choosing one consistent variety helps avoid confusion and gives our students a clear foundation to build on. Major examination bodies accept both British and American spelling, so there’s no need to be concerned that students will be penalised should they wish to obtain these qualifications. Holmwoods also accepts British spelling as correct.
We want to be clear: American English is not better or worse than British English — it’s just different. All native and non-native varieties of English are equally legitimate. Our goal is to equip our students to communicate effectively and confidently in any English-speaking environment.
